Similarly, if you have out-of country medical insurance through your "gold" credit card or other sources, you should find out the terms of the plan. You want to know who is covered, for how long and whether there are any restrictions on coverage.

Registering at a Canadian Government Office Abroad (ROCA)

Available on the website of the Consular Affairs Bureau of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade It is recommended that you register at the nearest Canadian government office abroad. This will help them contact you in case of an emergency. Registration is voluntary, and the information you provide is protected and used in accordance with the provisions of their Privacy Act. You can also register on-line.

In countries where Canada has no direct representation, there may be arrangements in place for you to register with another country’s embassy or consulate. Canada Direct is an automated, international access service offered by Bell Canada which allows Canadian travelers to place calls to Canada using the Canadian Telecommunications network. Canada Direct is a simple and cost-effective way of calling Canada and other countries from overseas.

Travel advisor associations and trade groups

Many agencies belong to professional travel or trade associations. Members must usually meet certain requirements for training, staffing and financing. Here are some common examples:

• Canadian Institute of Travel Counselors (CITC): This is Canada's national association for travel agents. It monitors professional standards and training, and offers approved courses for travel agents. Certified Travel Counselors are members who have passed CITC-administered exams and worked three years as full-time agents.
• International Air Transport Association (IATA): Travel agencies displaying IATA designation are authorized to sell tickets for IATA-member airlines.
• Air Transport Association of Canada: Affiliated agencies are authorized to sell domestic airline tickets.
• Alliance of Canadian Travel Associations (ACTA): Members must follow a code of standards and ethics. When a member agency has a business failure, ACTA will try to assist customers who might otherwise suffer a financial loss.
• Canadian Consumer Information Gateway provides access to over 400 government agencies. Form travel information choose Travel from the center menu.
